history

Re-creations is in fact not only related to the life cycle of a butterfly, but is now a third generation butterfly… read on, all will be explained.

The tiny egg of the
Re-creations caterpillar probably came about as a result of seeing a friends skirt cleverly made out of old ties. The young caterpillar stage of Re-creations first frequented local jumble sales and subsequently munched its way through many old ties, socks, serviettes and plastic bags to create wearable art from what ever was available.

During a time of exploration of many art forms – textiles, woodwork and a variety of sculpture, the first small Re-creations butterfly emerged as a little business selling recreated clothing;
Woolly scarf jumpers and jackets, glove hats, umbrella ponchos and many more tie creations, and with a small stall Re-creations toured small festivals and events. This butterfly had a lovely time a flittering and a fluttering until a call for travelling came and Re-creations was eventually packed away into old suitcases, ready for another day.

Following a period of training in Countryside Management and Environmental Education, as well as a taste of freelance community art work, Re-creations fluttered once again in the form of Environmental Arts and Drama workshops and projects when two women with similar ideas formed a business partnership, after working together on a Wildlife Trust’s Waste Awareness Raising project.

At this time Re-creations was about trying new ideas and working with a huge variety of different groups and exciting projects. Puppet shows and larger than life characters were used to explain environmental concepts, community carnivals and fashion shows were staged, as well as a host of workshops making arts and crafts from reused and natural materials. View a large archive of their work here.

Yet again a call for travelling came along and Re-creations lay in a pupa like state, churning and whirring and dreaming of the kind of butterfly it will be. It made a lifelong friend in the form of a bookworm called Rebound Books who turn books which were destined for landfill into wonderful and creative journals, notebooks, diaries and sketchbooks. It is an inspiration to realise that a livelihood can be created from waste. Rebound Books is now run as community enterprise.

This time Re-creations is metamorphosing into the website you see here. It draws from the wealth of inspiration found on the internet and others around the globe who are recreating ‘somethings out of nothings’, as well as the practices of Steiner-Waldorf education and their exciting approach of using natural materials and celebrating the seasons. It aims to be an eco-minded butterfly, learning how to flutter lightly.
